Psilocybin is the psychoactive compound found in magic mushrooms. Small studies in the US have produced encouraging results when psilocybin has been used to treat patients with anxiety and depression. For ongoing trials in Australia, a safe and steady supply of psilocybin needs to be established. As Joey Watson reports, geneticists at The University of Sydney are attempting to insert the genes which code for psilocybin in magic mushrooms into bacteria. If successful, this may lead to mass production of psilocybin in controlled conditions.
